Garage Door Opener Replacement: preparing for the visit

Garage Doors · Centre Wellington, Ontario

Illustrative garage doors scene

Since the storm the door behaves oddly: it reverses halfway down for no reason, the light flickers, and the travel limits drift so it either slams or stops short. The board inside is discontinued and the last repair only bought a few months.

Worth answering before the call

How much room is there between the top of the open door and the ceiling? Would you like a keypad outside, phone control, a camera or battery backup? Is the door steel, wood or aluminum, and is it insulated?

What is the red cord for?

It is the manual release. A tug on the red handle unhooks the trolley from the door arm so the door can be raised and lowered by hand while the power is off or the operator is being serviced. It hangs high enough to clear a vehicle roof but low enough to reach without a ladder. To reconnect, most units need only be run once and the trolley picks the arm back up; a few take a second tug.

Will the buttons built into my car work with the new opener?

Nearly always, yes. The in-car transmitter is taught to the new operator using the learn button on the head unit, much like a handheld remote. Some older vehicles predate the newest rolling-code systems and pair through a small repeater or bridge that the technician can supply. Bring the car into the driveway on installation day so it can be programmed and tested before the technician leaves.
