New-Construction Garage Door Installation
This garage will be heated and used beyond parking, so the opening needs more than a basic closure.
In plain words
The practical goal is a garage door that feels manageable even though the assembly is large and heavy. Correct springs counterbalance the section weight, rollers guide the door through aligned tracks and structural bracing holds the system in its intended position. The installer tunes those relationships before connecting any operator. Handover includes a manual balance check, complete travel cycles, control tests, care guidance and the information needed to identify the installed door and operator later.
How the visit goesA beam, sloped ceiling or duct crosses the space above the new opening. The door still needs a clear path, which makes headroom, backroom and the right track arrangement central to the plan.

How the visit goes

Reading the floor and driveway transition
The bottom seal can only follow the surface beneath it, so final floor conditions matter. The installer checks whether the slab is complete, where its high and low points sit, and how the interior floor meets the exterior approach. Drainage slope, coatings and planned finishes are discussed if they will change the landing elevation. This establishes the opening height and shows whether the seal can make even contact across the width. It also prevents a temporary construction surface from becoming the permanent reference for door position and travel limits.
Adding powered operation
An operator is introduced only after manual movement has been assessed. Its rail or shaft connection is mounted to suitable supports, aligned with the door and joined to the reinforced attachment point specified for the top section. The wall control and photoelectric sensors are installed in their planned positions, with wiring kept clear of moving hardware. Travel limits and operating force are set from the product instructions. Several complete cycles confirm that the powered system follows the door's path smoothly before reversal and entrapment-protection functions are tested.
A finished perimeter around the opening
The closed door presents even margins at the jambs and header, with the bottom seal resting across the finished floor and perimeter moulding meeting the exterior face. These flexible materials reduce drafts, light and weather entry while allowing the sections to move freely. The handoff identifies any caulking, cladding or floor work that another trade still owns. Once surrounding construction is complete, keeping paint, mortar and floor coatings off the seals and tracks preserves the fit established during installation and leaves the door ready for normal seasonal movement.

What affects the quote
Perimeter trim and weather sealing
Bottom seal, stop moulding and section seals can be named in the door scope. Exterior caulking, cladding returns or custom trim may remain with another trade.
Framing and attachment readiness
Accessible jambs, header support, spring anchoring and ceiling structure provide the installation base. Unresolved supports or covered attachment areas create separate work for the responsible building trade.
Construction sequencing
A clear installation window reduces conflicts with flooring, masonry, drywall and electrical crews. Split visits or changing site readiness add staging and coordination to the work.
What to have ready
- Where are the operator receptacle and control wiring planned?
- Which panel design, colour, insulation and window layout were selected?
- Will the garage include a vehicle lift or unusually tall parking?
New-Construction Garage Door Installation: questions
QuestionsDoes all framing need to be complete first?
The jambs, header, spring anchoring area and overhead attachment points used by the door system need to be complete, accessible and accepted by the responsible project party. Their locations depend on the selected track and counterbalance arrangement. If drywall or cladding will cover them, coordination happens before closing the surfaces. Structural design or framing changes remain separate project responsibilities, guided by the building drawings and door requirements.
What is the difference between a rough opening and a finished opening?
A rough opening is the framed construction opening before its final jamb surfaces, cladding returns or other finishes are applied. The finished opening is the clear width and height the installed door actually closes against. Door sizing and seal position rely on that final geometry. Reviewing both helps the project team place framing correctly while preventing finish thickness from quietly reducing the space reserved for the selected door.
When should the final door colour be selected?
Colour is easiest to coordinate while cladding, trim, windows and roofing selections are still available for comparison. The approved finish should be recorded before ordering because it is part of the manufactured sections. Physical samples viewed with the surrounding materials give a more useful reference than a screen alone. Any field finishing or touch-up responsibility is identified separately so installation and exterior finishing have clear boundaries.
